Tarot Musical – Revisited

So I know I’ve already posted about this back in May, but I’m currently in a Tarot Class and in one of the first days’ classes the instructor handed out a bunch of stuff, which I never really went through until recently and noticed that someone else had had the same idea about merging music with the Tarot.

Today I was re-doing a lot of work on my jukebox db/PHP application and thought I’d take another stab at relating the Tarot Trumps to music in my collection without looking at my old list nor the one provided by my instructor, and this is what I came up with:

  1. The Fool: Fooling Yourself – Styx
  2. The Magician: Magical Mystery Tour – Cheap Trick
  3. The High Priestess: The Mystic’s Dream – Loreena  McKennit
  4. The Empress: Rich Girl – Gwen Stefani
  5. The Emperor: King of Everything – Red Flag
  6. The Hierophant: Spirits – Mysterious Art
  7. The Lovers: Love Song – The Cure
  8. The Chariot: The Race – Yello
  9. Strength: This Woman’s Work – Kate Bush
  10. The Hermit: Behind Blue Eyes – The Who
  11. Wheel of Fortune: Wheel in the Sky – Journey
  12. Justice: Get the Balance Right – Depeche Mode
  13. Hanged Man: Lucky Man – Emerson, Lake, & Palmer
  14. Death: As It Fades – VnV Nation
  15. Temperance: Dance Along The Edge – Concrete Blonde
  16. The Devil: Deal With The Devil – Judas Priest
  17. The Tower: Lightning Crashes – Live
  18. The Star: Farthest Star – VnV Nation
  19. The Moon: Mexican Moon – Concrete Blonde
  20. The Sun: Soak Up The Sun – Sheryl Crow
  21. Judgement: Mama I’m Comin’ Home – Ozzy Osborn
  22. The World: Into The Galaxy – Midnight Juggernaughts

In other news, the Thanksgiving weekend has been nice, although I’ve been pretty lax on the gaming front.  Mainly I’ve been goofing around in Dragon Age and for some reason I let myself get sucked back into Hellgate London – it’s a great game with a truly flawed implementation.  Dunno what Flagship was thinking (if anything) when they released this game – it should have been just like the original Diablo was, Single Player, LAN, and some kind of “Battlenet” set-up (free) instead of trying to screw their fans for monthly fees.  They could’ve screwed ’em with RMT if they really felt they needed to. Oh well, just so much water under the bridge now…

I hope your holiday was amazing, filling, and relaxing!  Enjoy!

[NOTE: I’ve listed the decks used in the videos over on this later blog post.]

Tarot Musical – Revisited — 4 Comments

  1. Cool! I wrote a book about my spiritual awakening with one of the bands you’ve got listed, and my journey led me to the Tarot big time! I actually realized at one point that the band’s album titles could each be matched up to the 22 Major Arcana cards. Kinda wild. Anyway, good job! I like your list.

  2. Very cool that you could relate whole albums to the Major Arcana! I really like this playlist, much more so than my first attempt, and even more than the one my instructor handed out. It’s really odd that once I start the playlist, I have to listen through the whole thing to get “resolution” or something. I have the same response when I start up Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” I have to listen through to the end when the wall gets knocked down, or I end up in a ‘bad mood,’ or at the very least unfulfilled.

I also like how the songs seem to reference each other, for example in Ozzy Osborn’s “…Coming Home” he says he doesn’t need the Sun anymore, which is the preceding card. And how at the end of “Lucky Man,” the man dies, which leads into the Death card – the only card represented by an instrumental since Death is really beyond words.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed the playlist, and thanks for the feedback!
